Fostering with The Blue Cross

Having been established since 1897, The Blue Cross aims to ensure the welfare of animals by providing practical care, highlighting the benefits of companionship between animals and people and promoting a sense of respect and responsibility towards animals in the community. The Blue Cross treats pets whose owners cannot afford private veterinary treatment, finds permanent homes for unwanted or abandoned animals and educates the public in responsible animal ownership.

The Blue Cross has developed a rehoming foster scheme, run by volunteers. As part of this expansion, Pet Fostering Service Scotland and The Blue Cross are working collaboratively to help more needy pets in Scotland, and enable the effective rehoming for an increased number of animals.

We are looking for cat and dog foster carers who will meet the daily needs of pets in their care but also take the pets to the vets to ensure they can be health checked, vaccinated, microchipped, etc before finding a new home.

We are looking for individuals who want to make a real difference to local animal welfare and help promote pets in your care, arrange for potential adopters to meet the pets and carry out home visits on adopters with support.

We ask rehoming foster carers to complete a 7-day behavioural assessment on pets in their care to help identify what sort of home would be best suited for that particular pet.

Foster dogs will live in your home and ideally cats will live in chalet accommodation, usually in your garden or in a spare room indoors. A home study course is given to all potential volunteers and all fostering related costs will be covered by The Blue Cross, including cat chalets, pet equipment, food, veterinary treatment and behaviour advice.

We ask that volunteers be over 18 years old, have access to a car and have the time, experience and facilities to care for foster pets.
