As the festive season draws near, many of us begin to think about what Christmas really means – warmth, comfort, kindness, and connection. It’s a time when families gather, homes feel a little brighter, and we reflect on the year behind us.
But for some pets across Scotland, Christmas can be a time of uncertainty. When an owner faces illness, homelessness, domestic abuse, or another crisis, their much-loved animals may suddenly need somewhere safe to stay – and not everyone has the financial means to pay for alternatives like kennels or private boarding.
This year is especially meaningful for us at PFSS, as we celebrate our 40th year. For four decades, our service has supported pets whose owners cannot afford or access any other safe care during difficult times. We exist to ensure that, even in crisis, no pet is left without love, protection, and a temporary home.

A Safe Place in a Time of Crisis
Imagine being unable to care for your pet during one of the toughest moments of your life. For many owners, their animals are their constant source of comfort, love, and emotional support. When life takes an unexpected turn, the fear of losing a beloved pet can be overwhelming.
PFSS exists to make sure that never has to happen.
By offering temporary foster homes, we help keep pets safe and loved until their owners can get back on their feet. It means everything to the families we support, and the pets feel that love too. In a foster home, they receive warmth, care, attention, and a gentle routine that helps them feel secure during a confusing time.
And every Christmas, we see just how much difference that simple act of kindness can make.
If You Can’t Foster, You Can Still Make a Big Difference
Not everyone can welcome an extra pet into their home – and that’s absolutely okay. There are other ways to help, and even the smallest contribution goes further than you may imagine.
Every pet in foster care needs food, bedding, litter, leads, and veterinary support. During the cost-of-living crisis, the demand for our Hardship Fund has risen more than ever. A simple donation helps ensure no pet goes without what they need.
- £1 feeds a foster cat for a day
- £3 provides a week of clean litter
- £10 feeds a foster pet for up to two weeks
- £20 provides a bed and bowls for a dog in foster care
- £50 pays for a vet consultation for a pet who becomes unwell
These may seem like small actions, but together they create real, life-changing support for pets and their families.
This Christmas, a single act of generosity could bring comfort to a pet who is frightened or confused, and reassurance to an owner who is going through an incredibly difficult time.
Why This Matters More Than Ever
For 40 years, PFSS has helped keep pets and owners together through some of life’s most challenging situations. But this year, more families than ever are facing hardship, uncertainty, or crisis.
Your support helps ensure that pets don’t end up abandoned, surrendered, or separated forever from the people who love them. Instead, they stay safe in temporary foster homes – warm, loved, and protected until they can be reunited with their families.
This is the heart of what we do. And with your help, we can continue providing that lifeline.
Your Gift of Kindness Could Change a Life
Christmas is a season of giving, and giving love, security, and hope to a pet in need is one of the most meaningful gifts there is.
Whether you choose to foster or make a donation, your kindness becomes part of a bigger story. A story of compassion. A story of community. A story of keeping families together.
So this festive season, if you’re able, open your heart to a pet who needs you. Together, we can make this Christmas a little brighter for pets across Scotland.
If you’d like to learn more about fostering or to make a donation, the PFSS team would love to hear from you. Your support means the world.
