Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy longer days, sunshine, and more time outdoors with our pets. Whether it’s exploring a new walking route, relaxing in the garden, or enjoying a family day out, the warmer months offer plenty of opportunities to spend quality time together.
However, higher temperatures can also bring new challenges for our pets. Dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and other animals can all be affected by the heat, so taking a few simple precautions can help keep them safe and comfortable throughout the summer.
Staying Cool
Unlike people, pets can struggle to regulate their body temperature. Dogs, in particular, are at risk of overheating, especially during walks or exercise in warm weather.
Whenever possible, walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower. Carry fresh water with you and take regular breaks in shaded areas.
A simple way to check whether it is too hot for a walk is the five second pavement test. Place the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your dog’s paws.
Keeping Pets Hydrated
Fresh, clean drinking water should always be available, both at home and when you’re out and about.
Some pets also enjoy cooling treats during warmer weather. Frozen pet safe snacks or ice cubes in their water bowl can help them stay comfortable, but always ensure treats are suitable for your pet’s diet.
Never Leave Pets in Cars
Even on a mild summer day, the temperature inside a parked car can rise rapidly. Opening a window or parking in the shade does not prevent the inside of a vehicle from becoming dangerously hot.
If you’re travelling with your pet, always plan ahead and avoid leaving them alone in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.
Looking After More Than Dogs
While dogs often receive the most attention during hot weather, other pets also need extra care.
Rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, and small animals should have access to shade, fresh water, and well ventilated living spaces. Indoor pets can also benefit from cooler areas of the home during particularly warm days.
A Community That Cares
At PFSS, we know how important pets are to the people who love them. Whether they are enjoying summer adventures with their families or being cared for by one of our volunteer foster carers, every pet deserves to feel safe, comfortable, and loved.
Our volunteers work throughout Scotland to provide temporary homes for pets whose owners are facing illness, homelessness, or domestic abuse. Their kindness ensures pets continue to receive the care they need until they can be reunited with their families.
